A message for my pre-schooler on her first day of big school

I know its unusual for me to share posts like this but last year my daughter started school and I found it really difficult, a lot of people find it difficult! Obviously some people don’t and that’s fine, but if you are going through it right now I totally get you <3.

Here is a poem I wrote for her at the time.

For you, on your first day of big school

When I first take you to school, you’ll be too young to understand,
How difficult it’s going to be for me, to let go of your little hand.
I know I’ll be trying not to cry, I know my smile will be fake,
But it’s time for you to move on, and that’s difficult to take

You’ll always be my baby and though it may sound OTT,
Every step forward for you in life, is a step further away from me,
The house won’t feel the same without you, being with me in the day,
And the fine details of what we did I know, will slowly slip away.

We’ll soon forget the playgroups and the cups of tea gone cold,
You running around with your bum out and not doing as you’re told.
The play dates and the park trips were more valuable with you,
From now they’ll be just memories, of the things we used to do.

Saying that, I’m pleased for you, because I know that you will thrive
You’re such a social little thing and will be more so when you’re five.
But I just really love being with you! You are so clever and you’re kind,
And I’ll miss you and that part of my life, that we will leave behind.

But now it’s time for us to move on, from our little club of two,
And that’s hard to come to terms with, but there’s not much I can do.
As your new journey starts right here, and I hope that you will know,
You really mean the world to me but now it’s time for you to grow.
